Monteverde & the Cloud Forest
Home to the most famed cloud forest in
Costa Rica, Monteverde is a favorite of visitors. Established
by the Quakers in 1951, this region is bathed in cool, year-round
moisture creating a wonderland of ferns and trees covered
with bromeliads and orchids. It is also a refuge for rare
highland birds including the Resplendent Quetzal as well
as an amazing array of butterflies, frogs, coatimundis,
tree sloths and other wildlife.
"The Children's Rain Forest of the
World," acclaimed for its grass-roots conservation
efforts, will delight and educate, while visitors young
and old examine the incredible natural beauty that abounds.
Monteverde Cloud Forest is a biological
preserve covering 26,000 acres of dark green forests and
houses some 2,000 species of plants, 400 species of birds
and a 100 different species of mammals. At the Hummingbird
Gallery and Butterfly Garden, guests have the opportunity
of experiencing these colorful, flying jewels at a close
range.
Amazing views of this magnificent area
can be experienced from the ascending Sky Walk, a series
of suspension bridges high atop the forest canopy. Brave
the exciting, adventurous Canopy Tour while swinging above
and through the forest attached to secure ropes and pulleys
an experience like no other. Guided hikes and horseback
riding tours provide other options for visitors to gain
a close and personal view of this exotic wonderland.
